Plastic Surgery Results

Many people who are planning to have cosmetic surgery expect to see immediate results. In some procedures, improvement is obvious right after plastic surgery, however in other cosmetic procedures plastic surgery results will continue over time. The type of plastic surgery being performed and the materials being used will determine the how soon results are seen and how long cosmetic surgery results will last.

* For a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removing excess fat and skin from the abdominal wall flattens the abdomen.  While you will be able to go back to work in a few weeks and swelling will recede, complete cosmetic surgery results, including the fading and flattening of scars, can take anywhere from three months to two years.

* Breast augmentation consists of enhancing the size of the breasts using an inflatable implant.  A few days after the cosmetic surgery, the patient will be able to return to work, however the breasts will be extremely sensitive for up to a month. Plastic surgery results for this surgical procedure vary because implants will eventually require removal or replacement.

* Collagen and fat injections are commonly performed on patients seeking fuller lips or for smoothing out wrinkles. Immediate cosmetic surgery results are visible with collagen injections, and they usually last until they are absorbed into the underlying skin, which is anywhere from a few months to a year. Fat injections can have longer lasting cosmetic surgery results.

* Dermabrasion is a mechanical scraping of the top layers of skin using a high-speed rotary wheel.  This cosmetic surgery results in the softening of the sharp edges of skin surface irregularities, including acne and other scars and fine wrinkles, especially around the mouth.  Dermabrasion cosmetic surgery results are permanent, however new wrinkles may form as skin ages.

* Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, corrects drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle. Cosmetic surgery results can last several years for this procedure and are sometimes permanent.

* Facelifts are usually very successful for improving sagging facial skin, jowls, and loose neck skin by removing excess fat, tightening muscles, and re-draping skin. Plastic surgery results from a face lift usually last anywhere from five to ten years.

* Facial implants are becoming a more popular type of cosmetic surgery. Facial implant cosmetic surgery changes the basic shape and balance of the face using carefully shaped implants to build up a receding chin, add prominence to cheekbones, or reshape the jaw line. In two to four weeks, swelling will recede, revealing your new permanent looks.

* Forehead lifts minimize forehead creases, drooping eyebrows, hooding over eyes, furrowed forehead and frown lines by removing excess tissue, altering muscles and tightening the forehead skin. This method may be performed with an incision across the top of the head just behind the hairline.  This type of cosmetic surgery results in a tightened forehead that lasts anywhere from five to ten years.

* Liposuction can improve body shape by removing fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise with a tube and vacuum device. Common areas targeted for liposuction include chin, cheeks, neck, upper arms, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. Cosmetic surgery results of this procedure are permanent, as long as treatment is accompanied by a sensible diet and exercise.

* Rhinoplasty is the reshaping of the nose by reducing or increasing size, removing a hump, changing the shape of the tip or bridge, narrowing the span of nostrils, or changing the angle between nose and upper lip. This procedure may also relieve some breathing problems caused by a deviated septum. Rhinoplasty plastic surgery results are permanent, provided the nose is not severely damaged after cosmetic surgery.

Plastic surgery results vary greatly depending on the type of cosmetic surgery, the method of surgery used, and the individual on whom the procedure is performed.   Consult with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to determine what type and method of operation will give you the best plastic surgery results possible.
